VMI Record: Entered VMI- Sept. 17, 1858; Left ca. July, 1861; Made Honorary Graduate of the Class of 1862 on July 2, 1869.

Military Record: Drill Master for VMI Corps of Cadets in Spring of 1861; Appointed 2nd Lieut. of Infantry and Adjutant at Camp Lee July 16, 1861; Assigned to 56th Va. As Adjutant Oct. 14, 1861; left on sick leave (expected to die from typhoid fever) at Russellville, Ky. Feb. 1862; Recovered and made way on foot to Va.; Appointed 1st Lieut., Adjutant of 34th Va. Oct. 14, 1862; received one day leave on Aug. 25, 1863 to accompany some young ladies to Burkesville; Unofficial source says he was wounded in action in Petersburg trenches and at Hatcher's Run. Paroled at Appomattox in 1865.

Careers: Planter; mill owner; lawyer; member of both houses of the Virginia Legislature.
